Aviation Security Officers
The Aviation Security Officer function requires sensible, practical people, who have a good sense of judgement and are able to communicate with people at all levels.
You need to be fit and healthy. Because of the vigorous nature of the job, Avsec cannot employ applicants with certain conditions. These include colour blindness, high blood pressure or back problems.
Requirements for Aviation Security Officers
People who want to be Aviation Security Officers must have:
- A current Full New Zealand Drivers Licence
- New Zealand Residency or New Zealand Citizenship
- A good grasp of the English language is very important, but knowledge of another language/culture can be a definite advantage
- Flexibility around working hours (some airports have rotational shift work)
- Good people skills, integrity, honesty and trustworthiness
- Pride in working within a uniformed organisation
Please note all applicants who are shortlisted are required to be vetted by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, the New Zealand Police, and other government departments, as part of the Security Clearance process.
Hours of Work
The hours of work could be full-time (an average of 40 hours per week), or part-time (varying from 12 – 30 hours or more per week). Hours of work are different from airport to airport. Some airports are a 24 hour/7 day a week operation.
Remuneration and Rewards

Avsec has also introduced a long service recognition programme that provides for a lump sum payment to officers who attain respectively five, ten, fifteen, twenty and twenty five year’s service. There are also long service badges that are worn as part of the uniform and certificates presented to the recipients.
