Working as an Aviation Security Officer

As an Aviation Security Officer (ASO) you will be expected to perform a range of duties which are designed to ensure the safety and security of aviation within New Zealand.

The people we are looking for are dedicated, responsible and willing to commit to ensuring this safety and security within our airports.

To achieve this, ASO’s are required to perform the following tasks:

  • Passenger and carry-on luggage screening;
  • Screening of checked-in baggage;
  • Screening of airport workers;
  • Airport and aircraft searches;
  • Airside driving and escorts; and
  • Other tasks as required.

Avsec does have certain requirements that all applicants must meet. They are:

  • A current full New Zealand driver’s licence;
  • New Zealand residency or New Zealand citizenship;
  • Officer must be fit and healthy and be able to pass a pre–employment medical assessment. Avsec cannot employ applicants with certain conditions including colour blindness, high blood pressure or back problems;
  • A good grasp of the English language is important and knowledge of another language can be a definite advantage;
  • Flexibility around working hours and ability to commit to shift work on a rotating roster;
  • Good people skills, integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness. The competencies we look for are:

o Relating – Empathy, attentiveness to individual differences, ability to persuade, taking charge.

Please note all applicants who are shortlisted are required to be vetted by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, the New Zealand Police, and other government departments as part of the Security Clearance process.
