The Aviation Security Service has close ties with the airlines, airports
and aviation security organisations of the South Pacific region.
An element of the Service's approach to the management of New
Zealand's aviation security risks involves provision of training
and consultancy services to the Pacific region authorities and
airlines. There is mutual benefit to this country, the agencies
and airlines as the South Pacific region represents a very real
threat to the management of New Zealand's aviation security risk.
Given the extent of the links between those countries and our
three main airports, it is important for New Zealand to take a
proactive approach to the provision of training and other assistance.
Generally such activities are funded through the Government's Pacific Security Fund but some are also charged on a full cost recovery
basis.
In recent years the Service has faced pressure from a number
of regulators, including the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority,
the US Federal Aviation Administration, the Australian Department
of Transport as well as Air New Zealand and QANTAS to enhance
its role in this area.
