Far from using the latest x-ray technology to visually "strip search" air
travellers, New Zealand's Aviation Security Service (Avsec) is not even in the
process of buying or trialling such new equipment, according to Chief
Executive, Mark Everitt.
Avsec is tasked under legislation to inquire into and keep itself informed on
security techniques, systems, devices and practices and procedures. "We take
our role here very seriously" says Mr Everitt. "We are well aware of a wide
range of specific security technologies available worldwide, including the body
scanning technologies being used at Schiphol Airport in Holland, which has
triggered the latest media flurry.
"However, I can assure the travelling public that we are not about to install
such equipment," says Mr Everitt.
"Our policy around significant new technologies, especially ones which may have
privacy issues, is and has always been to have wide consultation with our
stakeholders, particularly the government which represents the public, before
any intrusive or controversial technologies might be introduced."
Any use of such technologies would also need be taken formally to government for
its agreement, Mr Everitt said.
"I wish to emphasise that Avsec is not proposing to purchase such equipment and
that there is always a lengthy and clear process around deciding when and where
to use new equipment. Avsec respects and uses such processes."
